Etosha's floodlit waterholes operate year-round, but the concession to illuminate them is extended only to guests sleeping within the park's three rest camps: Okaukuejo, Halali, and Namutoni. No day visitor may remain past sunset.
The restriction, enforced since the 1970s, was designed to limit disturbance during the hours when lion, leopard, and black rhino converge on permanent springs. Okaukuejo's waterhole, ringed by a low stone wall and illuminated by sodium lamps, draws the highest concentration of nocturnal visitors. Rangers estimate that between May and October — Namibia's dry winter — elephants arrive every twenty minutes, and predators appear on sixty percent of nights.
The Etosha night game drive extends this privilege beyond the perimeter fence. Departing after the 19:30 gate closure, specialist vehicles equipped with spotlights and thermal scopes track movement along the calcrete roads that web the southern plains. The terrain, a fossil lakebed covered in white clay and scattered mopane, offers minimal cover, and animals tolerate the light at distances as close as fifteen metres. Black-backed jackal, spotted hyena, and Cape fox are recorded on ninety percent of drives; lion sightings occur on approximately forty percent of outings between June and September, when prides follow springbok herds toward the depleted pan.
Etosha's nocturnal fauna includes twelve species absent or inactive during daylight hours. Aardwolf, bat-eared fox, and African wildcat emerge only after dusk, their movements governed by termite swarms and ground-nesting birds. Porcupine forage along road edges, their quills luminous under spotlight. Honey badger, though rare, are sighted three to five times per season, usually near Salvadora thickets where they excavate scorpion burrows. The park's population of brown hyena, Namibia's rarest large carnivore, persists at fewer than fifty individuals, but two territorial clans range within ten kilometres of Okaukuejo, and guides familiar with their latrine sites report consistent encounters.
Night drives operate under strict permit, issued only to lodges holding Ministry of Environment concessions. Vehicles carry no more than nine passengers, and routes are rotated every forty-eight hours to prevent habituation. The experience is silent save for the engine and the guide's whispered narration, conducted in English or German. Thermal imaging reveals body heat through mopane scrub, and red-filter torches preserve passengers' night vision while illuminating eye-shine — the tapetum lucidum that allows carnivores to hunt in near darkness.
