The Etosha Pan itself — a 4,760-square-kilometre depression visible from space — formed roughly 16 million years ago when the Kunene River changed course, leaving a mineral-rich basin that floods every few years and dries to a blinding white crust. Etosha's wildlife density peaks between June and September, when the dry season compresses thousands of animals into tighter ranges around permanent water. A single morning drive may record 12 species at one waterhole: zebra, wildebeest, jackal, hyena, ostrich, secretary bird, steenbok, impala, eland, oryx, warthog, and a cheetah crouched 80 metres back in the grass.
