The pan itself—a dry lakebed stretching 4,760 square kilometres—once connected to the Kalahari basin before tectonic shifts and climatic changes drained its surface waters twelve million years ago. Today the pan floor is a blinding white expanse flanked by mopane woodland, acacia savanna, and forty-three natural and artificial waterholes that concentrate wildlife densities unmatched elsewhere in southern Africa.
German colonial officer Friedrich von Lindequist gazetted the park in 1907 as Game Reserve Number Two. Initial boundaries enclosed 99,526 square kilometres, but livestock pressure and political negotiations shrank the reserve to its present extent by 1967. The park's name derives from the Oshindonga phrase meaning "great white place," a direct reference to the salt pan's appearance during the dry season. Etosha's conservation model has since become a benchmark for self-funded protected areas: entrance fees and camp concessions fund anti-poaching patrols, waterhole infrastructure, and veterinary interventions without external subsidies.
Etosha supports 114 mammal species and 340 bird species, including four of Africa's Big Five. Elephant populations fluctuate seasonally between 2,500 and 3,000 individuals, while black rhino numbers have rebounded to over 300 animals following intensive protection efforts since 1989. The park's lion prides are known for hunting strategies adapted to the open pan margins, where prey has limited cover. Cheetah, leopard, and spotted hyena complete the predator guild. Dry-season months from May to October compress animal movements around permanent water, making guided game drives particularly productive.
